If you want some nice upscale coctail in a place with romance and history, head to L’Hôtel at the Left Bank.

There’s also a frescoed salon, and the plush Louis XIV style bar with stripey sofaswhere you can try a cocktail named in Oscar Wilde’s honour. He died at this place. Also other great writers and people of the beau monde have been there. (Johnny Depp is often to be seen in the bar.) The bar has deep armchairs, leather-bound tomes and sexy lighting.

The restaurant –  one Michelin star –  flaunts leopard print carpet, aubergine striped sofas and marbelised columns.
